Global Poker Awards 2020

The Second Annual Global Poker Awards was held on Friday, March 6th at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas. The event is the annual celebration of the best and brightest in the game of poker. Festivities were hosted by Drea Renee and Maria Ho.

In the end, there were really no surprise winners on this list with Joey Ingram walking away with two awards, including Journalist of the Year.

Ingram Receives Two Awards

Popular poker blogger and celebrity Joe Ingram walked away with a pair of awards on Friday. He first won the Journalist of the Year award on the strength of his investigative efforts regarding the Mike Postle cheating scandal.

Later in the show, he won Media Content of the Year for Video for his series of videos breaking down the Postle cheating scandal. Ingram goes through a lot of footage in these videos and makes solid arguments regarding the alleged activity. His videos were wildly popular during this period and Ingram earned a ton of respect from the poker community for his efforts.

Many of the other awards were pretty standard. Robert Campbell won GPI Breakout Player of the Year due to his two bracelet performance at WSOP Europe. Nick Schulman won Broadcaster of the Year while Stephen Chidwick won Players Choice for Toughest Opponent.

In the People’s Choice categories, Jonathan Little earned the People’s Choice Award for Poker Personality of the Year. Ryan Riess won the Hand of the Year award for his 10-high all-in call during the EPT Monte Carlo.

Chan and Cernuto Receive Special Recognition

Two special awards were given during the ceremony. The first was the inaugural Poker ICON award. Johnny Chan was the first recipient of the award. The 10-time WSOP bracelet winner is the last person to win back-to-back WSOP Main Events and was even featured in Rounders.

The other special award was the Hendon Mob Award which went to Miami John Cernuto. Cernuto is one of the most successful poker players from the old school era of poker and a successful player in all disciplines of the game.

Overall, the second Global Poker Awards was considered a success. While some may consider this a glorified glad-handing session, it is still a fun showcase of the previous year. It would be nice to see the awards expand beyond a somewhat narrow focus, but poker does tend to be a popularity contest like much of the rest of the world.
