How to Play Razz Poker

Razz Poker is played with the same rules as Seven Card Stud with two differences. The biggest difference is that in Razz poker, the goal is to get the lowest cards possible. These reversed hand values also change which players are required to begin each betting round. Read on for the complete list of Razz poker rules.

The main thing to remember about Razz poker is that the player with the lowest, non-paired hand wins the pot. Aces count as low and straights and flushes have no affect on the hand. The best possible hand in Razz is A-2-3-4-5 and from there, hands are ranked starting from the highest card and working down. For example, A-2-3-7-9 would lose to 3-4-5-6-9. This is because the two hands tie for the highest card so the hands are evaluated based on their second-highest cards.

Razz uses antes just like 7 Card Stud to create a pot for each hand. In this system, each player must contribute a small bet to the pot at the beginning of each hand. The size of the ante varies but is usually around 10% the size of the lower betting limit. In a $5/$10 game of Razz, an average ante would be $0.50.

3rd Street

Each player is dealt two cards face down and one card face up. The player with the highest card showing must pay the bring-in, which is a bet equal to half the lower betting limit. This player now begins the betting by either leaving the bring-in as is or “completing” the bring-in to one full minimum bet. The remaining players may either call the current bring-in, raise or fold. Betting then continues clockwise around the table.

4th Street

Each player is dealt one card face up. The player with the lowest hand showing begins the betting on this round and all sLocksequent rounds. The first player to act may check, bet or fold. Betting continues clockwise around the table.

5th Street

Each player is dealt one card face up. There is another round of betting that begins with the player who has the lowest hand showing. This round is played in the same manner as the last round except all bets must now be made  in increments of the upper betting limit.

6th Street

Each player is dealt one card face up. This is followed by another round of betting.

7th Street

One card is dealt face down to each player. The remaining players have one last round of betting.

Showdown

The players still in the hand may now flip over their cards. The player who has the lowest five-card hand (using any five of his seven cards) wins the pot.
