Chidwick, Greenwood, and Mateos Win at EPT Prague

Stephen Chidwick EPT

The 2019 EPT Prague is barreling towards a conclusion and several big names have already secured massive scores. Adrian Mateos kicked things off early in the series after taking down the opening €10k NL Hold’em event.

A couple of events later, Stephen Chidwick added another big score to his epic 2019 with a win in the €50k EPT Super High Roller. Finally, Sam Greenwood and Steve O’Dwyer chopped the second €25k Super High Roller with Greenwood walking away the winner in an unusual final hand.

Adrian Mateos Wins €10k NL Event

The opening event of the EPT Prague was a €10,300 NL Hold’em Event. The 61 entry field was an uptick from last year’s event and created a prize pool of €591,700. A solid field took to this event, evidenced by those making the final table.

Among the players at the final table included Bertrand Grospellier, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Orpen Kisacikoglu, and Spain’s Adrian Mateos. By the time heads-up play was reached, it was Mateos facing Anton Yakuba for the title.

Mateos started heads-up play with a 2 to 1 chip advantage and never relinquished it. The final hand saw Yakuba call down an all-in bet with just king-high, but it was no good against Mateos’ two pair.

For the win, Mateos earned €177,500, or $196,304 USD. This was his third straight victory after taking down two events in November at the partypoker MILLIONS in the Bahamas. Mateos nearly has $20 million in career earnings and is 26th on Poker’s All-Time Money List.

Stephen Chidwick Wins €50k Super High Roller

One of the most popular events at the EPT Prague is the €50k Super High Roller and this year’s event drew a solid field of 44 entries. The final table of six was paid in this one and the final table proved to be an elite one.

Adrian Mateos and Bertrand Grospellier both made their second final table of this series in this event. Joining him at the final table were Ben Heath, Steve O’Dwyer, Jean-Noel Thorel, and Stephen Chidwick.

Mateos ended up finishing in third place this time around, breaking his losing streak. Grospellier ended up making heads-up play this time around but faced Stephen Chidwick. Chidwick has been on fire this year and his streak continued in this event. He came into heads-up play with more than a 2 to 1 chip lead and was never in any danger of losing.

In the final hand of the poker tournament, Grospellier shoved with A-K and Chidwick called with Qs-10s. A ten on the turn proved enough to give Chidwick the hand, and the victory. Chidwick won €725,710 in prize money, giving him over $13 million in combined earnings for 2019. The victory also allowed him to leapfrog Fedor Holz for seventh on Poker’s All-Time Money List.

Sam Greenwood Wins €25k Single-Day High Roller II

The EPT Prague had a pair of €25k Single-Day High Rollers and the second one produced a stellar final table. Steve O’Dwyer once again made the final table and joining him there were Matthias Eibinger, Danny Tang, George Wolff, Sam Grafton, Sam Greenwood, and Jans Arends.

Heads-up play was reached when Sam Grafton ran pocket sixes into the pocket aces of O’Dwyer. This setup what would have normally been a spirited heads-up match between Sam Greenwood and O’Dwyer. However, the pair had other plans.

Greenwood and O’Dwyer made a chop deal based on stack sizes. O’Dwyer had the lead and received €411,311 while Greenwood got €384,969. The pair then decided to play one hand for the trophy, but it was a bit of an unusual hand. O’Dwyer would get two pairs of hole cards while Greenwood would get just a single pair.

Amazingly, one hand was all that Greenwood needed. He was dealt J-8 and the board ran out 9-7-4-A-10 to give him a straight. Even with two hands, O’Dwyer could only muster a measly pair of aces. It didn’t matter in the end. Greenwood might have gotten the trophy, but O’Dwyer walked away with the most money.
