High Stakes Poker Filming Underway

High Stakes Poker Revival

Remember back in March when the poker world was buzzing about the potential return of High Stakes Poker? We haven’t heard much about the potential reboot, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In September, Nick Schulman said that the show would return in late 2020, but otherwise, not much has been revealed.

The latest news about the reboot came from the most unlikely source imaginable. On Tuesday, Tom Dwan leaked word on Twitter that filming for High Stakes Poker was underway and gave us a glimpse at some of the players that will be participating.

Tom Dwan Reveals High Stakes Poker Filming

Filming for the reboot of High Stakes Poker is officially underway at the ARIA in Las Vegas. On Tuesday, Tom Dwan took to Twitter to show the world that he’s playing in the reboot and showed off some of the people that will be playing:

As you can see, the table is stacked with Phil Ivey, Brandon Adams, Ben Lam, Jason Koon, John Andress, and Phil Hellmuth. Not much else was revealed in the short clip. However, Dwan did follow up with a clip of him playing pocket sevens:

It appears that the show will feature some of the banter we love to hear, as Dwan tweeted that the group played some Lodden Thinks during filming:

Poker Go Confirms December 16th Premiere

We didn’t have to wait long before Poker Central confirmed the premiere date for the first season of the reboot. They tweeted on Wednesday that “ALL NEW EPISODES” will start streaming on PokerGo starting December 16.

We don’t know quite yet who will be commentating on the show as Poker Central has been tight-lipped about it. When asked directly, PokerGo commented, “Stay tuned for more details!” As you may remember, Gape Kaplan and AJ Benza hosted the show for the first five seasons. Kara Scott replaced Benza in the sixth season. Kaplan left the show and Norm Macdonald took over Kaplan’s duties for season 7.

There are many that would love to see Kaplan return with Benza, or maybe someone like Ali Nejad. Others would like to see Nick Schulman step into the commentator’s role, but personally, I would rather see anyone else.

Will the New Show Live Up to the Original?

If you’ve never watched the original High Stakes Poker program that originally aired on GSN, then you need to go and watch a few episodes. The program featured a mix of poker pros, semi-pros, and amateur players from various walks of life in the poker world. You had pros that were mainly known for their poker tournament prowess while others were best known as being elite cash game poker players. Then you had a few that were merely high rolling businessmen that could hold their own at the poker tables.

The program was made better due to both the banter at the table and the commentary from Kaplan and others. Often, the poker was secondary to what was going on around the table. However, the poker could be quite compelling as well. Who can forget the largest pot in TV poker history between Durrr and Barry Greenstein? Or how about Daniel Negreanu losing a bit hand with a full house against the quads of Gus Hansen?

For this reboot to be successful, they need to have a similar mix of banter and solid poker play by the players. Hopefully, we get commentators that can drive the action rather than hijack it like some PokerGo commentators in the past. A solid pair of broadcasters will help make the reboot a success.

High Stakes Poker will air exclusively on PokerGo. If you are not already subscribed, head over now and do so. High Stakes Poker is not the only reason to subscribe as PokerGo has a vast poker content library that’s regularly expanding. The High Stakes Poker reboot will be one of the crowning gems of that library.
