How to Play Online Craps

Craps looks a lot more difficult than it actually is. If you read these rules and run through a few practice rounds, you’ll have the game down pat in no time. The key to playing craps is to get comfortable with the most basic bet (the pass line bet). Once you get that bet down, all the rest will come easily.

The Pass Line Bet

This is the basic bet in craps. You can place a pass line bet by placing your chips on the area of the craps layout that says “pass line.” Once that bet has been placed, the dice will then decide the outcome.

The first roll of the dice is called the “come out roll.” There are three possible outcomes on the come out roll:

  • The dice land on 2, 3 or 12: This is called a “craps” and you lose the bet
  • The dice land on 7 or 11: This is called a “natural” and you win the bet
  • The dice land on any other number: a point is established

If a point is established on the come out roll, your bet remains in limbo for a bit longer. The dice will then be rolled again and again until the dice either land on that point again or on a seven. If the dice land on the point first, you win the bet. If a seven shows up before the point is rolled again, you lose the bet.

Other Craps Bets

Don’t Pass Line Bet – This one is basically the opposite of the pass line bet. In this one, your bet wins if the come out roll is a 2 or 3 and it loses if the come out roll is a 7 or 11. On all other outcomes, a point is set and you hope to see a 7 rolled before the point is rolled again.

Buying the Odds – This is an additional bet that can be placed once a point has been established. With this bet, you can pick any of the following numbers and receive payouts if those numbers are rolled before a 7 is rolled. The payouts are as follows:

  • If you bet on 4 or 10: Pays 2:1
  • If you bet on 5 or 9: Pays 3:2
  • If you bet on 6 or 8: Pays 6:5

Laying the Odds – This is basically the opposite of the “buying the odds” bet. In this bet, you pick any point and then wager that a 7 will be rolled before that point.

  • If you pick 4 or 10: Pays 1:2
  • If you pick 5 or 9: Pays 2:3
  • If you pick 6 or 8: Pays 5:6

Come Bet – This bet is just like the pass line bet, except it can be placed in the middle of a round. When you place a come bet, the next roll of the dice is your come out roll. You win the come bet if the next roll is a 7 or 11 and you lose if the next roll is a 2, 3 or 12. All other rolls set a point for you, just like the pass line bet.

Don’t Come Bet – This is the opposite of the come bet. You can place this bet in the middle of the round and it wins if the next roll is a 2 or 3. This bet loses if the next roll is a 7 or 11. All other rolls set a point for you.
