The 2019 World Series of Poker is just around the corner. Ok, it’s actually a month and a half away but Daniel Negreanu decided to talk about the WSOP and the poker world is obliged to talk about it. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock the last couple of year, you know that Negreanu loves to talk about how he’s doing at the WSOP and provided daily blogs of his exploits.

Well, you can expect much of the same this summer but with a different angle. Negreanu is planning on grinding the summer with the average WSOP players and plans to play in a ton of lower buy-in event. He is doing so in an attempt to take down his third WSOP Player of the Year title and may even lay some serious dough toward “min-cash” prop bet.

Negreanu to Play Smaller Events

Daniel Negreanu is probably the most famous poker player in the world and plays the highest stakes imaginable. However, this year he is planning a bit of a different strategy for the World Series of Poker. He plans to play in a ton of the lower buy-in events, including the gimmicky events such as the Colossus.

He recently stated on his DAT Poker Podcast that he wanted to give those events a try because he feels that the events will have a much higher ROI than your standard $10k event. There’s another reason he is choosing to play these events – WSOP Player of the Year.

Negreanu is the only person in WSOP History to win Player of the Year twice and he is looking to win it a third time in 2019. He explained that the POY points structure is set up to give more points towards someone who min-cashes a ton in big field events over making final tables in $10k events.

He thinks he will be able to do similar to what Chris Ferguson did in 2017 where he cashed 23 times on his way to winning Player of the Year. The system was revamped after Ferguson’s win but Negreanu thinks he can exploit it to win POY for the third time.

Negreanu Willing to Bet $5 Million on His Play

Negreanu is confident on his ability to cash at will during the 2019 WSOP, so much so that he is willing to lay some serious money in a prop bet. He explained that in many of the gimmicky events, such as the Colossus, you can easily cash multiple times without putting in a ton of effort. Couple that with his general ability at the tables, and he feels he cash a minimum of 15 times this summer.

Negreanu went so far as to offer up $5 million for a prop bet at even money that he could cash at least 15 times at the WSOP. Based on the examples he’s given, we have to assume that multiple cashes in the same event will count towards the cashing total.

Keep in mind that we are talking 15 cashes out of 86 events, assuming that we are only talking about the WSOP in Las Vegas. If you include the WSOP Europe and the WSOP Circuit Championship, then he has 100 chances to cash. That just 15% of his events, and realistically it seems he should be able to achieve such a goal.

Negreanu Setting Himself Up for an Epic Summer or Another Loser?

The question now becomes whether Daniel Negreanu is setting himself up to have a successful summer or if he is going to throw another high six-figures at the WSOP like he did last year – if you don’t include the Big One for One Drop. If you do include it, he dropped $1.3 million at the WSOP in 2018.

If Negreanu can get action on his prop bet, or any variation of that bet, then it may not matter if he wins a ton of money in the events. He could simply channel his Allen Kessler to min-cash his way to big money. Of course, time will tell whether this will be an epic Summer for Negreanu or simply another example of why you shouldn’t throw over $100,000 or more at the World Series of Poker.
