Alati and Hellmuth Wins Incredible Prop Bets

Poker players love to make prop bets and two recent prop bets have garnered a lot of attention. Rich Alati agreed to an incredibly dangerous prop bet to try and win $100,000. Meanwhile, Phil Hellmuth did a much safer bet and proved that he is surprisingly athletic for a poker player in his fifties.

Rich Alati Wins $62,400 After Staying in Dark Bathroom 20 Days

In case you missed it, Rich Alati and Rory Young arranged one of the strangest prop bets we’ve heard of in recent memory. Alati agreed to stay in an unlit bathroom for 30 days for the sum of $100,000. He was not allowed human interaction and was not allowed to use sleep aids, drugs, or alcohol to pass the time. His only methods of passing the time were a paddleball and a Rubik’s cube.

The prop bet had garnered a ton of criticism from poker fans and outsiders alike, many exhibiting concern over the mental state of Alati after attempting such a potentially mind-altering challenge. In the end, he proved he was able to withstand the isolation, so much so that Young agreed that the bet was a loser for him.

After 20 days, Young negotiated a buyout with Alati. After checking in on Young, he determined that he was in good spirits and decided that a buyout was in both parties best interest. In the end, Alati agreed to pay $62,400, saving himself the remaining $27,600. Alati emerged from his bathroom the winner of the bet and apparently no worse for wear.

Young told Action Network that he couldn’t believe how alert that Alati was when he checked in on him around Day 20 and at that point decided his bet was a loser. According to Young, “I underestimated his mindset, his resolve. I’m not disappointed I made the bet, I thought I had the better side, but he has exceeded all my expectations.”

Note: This is not the type of bet we would ever recommend someone taking. We are merely reporting the result of this crazy prop bet. Isolation bets are dangerous, similar to extreme weight loss bets and not recommended, even for insane prop bet money.

Phil Hellmuth Wins Tennis Prop Bet and $23,000

In a prop bet that’s remarkably safer for participants, Phil Hellmuth bet that if given 20 chances, he would return a serve from a professional tennis player. He put up $7k on even money on that bet. Also, he was given 8-to-1 odds that he could win at least one point against the professional. He put up $2,000 on that bet. In total, Hellmuth stood to win $23,000.

We should point out that Hellmuth is a rank beginner at tennis, so most figured that the pro would eat Hellmuth alive. In the beginning, that was the case. Hellmuth struggled to even get a racket on the ball. However, at one point Hellmuth managed to not only to return a ball but in such a way that his opponent could not hit the ball back over the net.

Granted, it wasn’t the prettiest shot by Hellmuth but in the end, the ball came back to win the serve bet and since the pro did not return the shot, Hellmuth also won the point bet, earning $23,000 in the process. Below is a video of the winning bet:

This isn’t the first time that Hellmuth has won a sports-related prop bet. Last year, he won $15,000 off of Doug Polk after he hit a three-point shot in basketball with no warmup. He had put up $1,500 on 10-1 odds. Hellmuth stepped up and drained the shot to the dismay of Polk and the glee of those in attendance.

Prop bets like the ones that Phil Hellmuth do are very fun and a great way for players to have a bit of fun. While most of us couldn’t afford to put up the insane money that Hellmuth and company do for these bets, at least we don’t have to worry about Hellmuth going crazy after the bet.
