Schindler Wrestles CardPlayer POY Lead from Chidwick

Jake SChil

With September nearly at a close, we can start taking another look at the Player of the Year races. Stephen Chidwick still leads the Global Poker Index POY race, but Jake Schindler has managed to wrestle the lead away from him in the CardPlayer POY race.

Meanwhile, the High Roller of the Year Race has seen little change up top with Cary Katz extending his lead after multiple cashes at the 2018 Poker Masters. Sam Soverel is still in second, but David Peters is now in third after finishing just short of winning the Poker Masters Purple Jacket.

Schindler Now Leads CardPlayer POY Race

Jake Schindler enjoyed a great run at the 2018 Poker Masters, making three final tables and earning over $575,000. This run allowed Schindler to overtake Stephen Chidwick for first in the race for CardPlayer Player of the Year.

A month ago, Schindler trailed Chidwick by a single point, but now holds a 706 point lead with 8,089 points to 7,383 points for Chidwick. The only other players on the list with a realistic chance of catching Schindler at this point is Justin Bonomo who has 7,053 points.

Schindler has enjoyed an awesome 2018 with a career-best $7.05 million in live tournament earnings. His best finish this year came back in April when he took down the €100,000 Super High Roller of the partypoker MILLIONS Grand Final Barcelona for $2.15 million. He also had an awesome run at the 2018 US Poker Open, making the final table in three events and just missing out on a fourth one.

Chidwick Still Leading GPI POY Race

Things haven’t changed a lot in the Global Poker Index’s POY race. Stephen Chidwick still leads with 3,691.67 points. None of his scores since our last in August have earned him additional points. The same is true for Justin Bonomo who has 3,660.28 points. Jake Schindler did manage to pick up a few points and now has 3,625.15 points heading into the last quarter of 2018.

The only other player with any chance of making a run for GPI POY is David Peters. He now has 5,561.52 points with three months left in the year. Peters is known for his high volume of tournaments and with the 2018 World Series of Poker Europe just around the corner, he still has a reasonable shot to win it all.

Cary Katz Still Leads High Roller of the Year Race

Cary Katz has extended his lead in the High Roller of the Year Race after cashing three times and making the final table of the Short Deck Poker event at the 2018 Poker Masters. He now has 14 cashes, one win, and $1.325 million in earnings, good for 1,155 point.

Sam Soverel is still in second after his crazy run in summer Aria High Rollers. He has 1,020 points with 10 cashes, five wins, and $1.6 million in earnings.

David Peters has managed to leapfrog into third place after his killer run at the 2018 Poker Masters. He now has four cashes towards POY, including two wins and $1.55 million in earnings. He only has 800 points, but this race runs all the way through the 2019 Super High Roller Bowl.

Out of all the races on this list, the High Roller of the Year is the one that is most likely to change leaders multiple times due to the number of events played. Also, it is hard to imagine Cary Katz continuing the run he’s been on.

For the other races on this list, there’s still a ways to go before we crown champions and a lot of poker to be played. Neither of the frontrunners has an insurmountable lead so this will be an interesting sweat.
