Poker Central Announces Super High Roller Bowl V For December

The Super High Roller Bowl has become the top High Roller event in the world in just four short years. Traditionally, it has kicked off the summer with the winner taking down the second or third largest first-place prize of the year.

Now, the organizers are looking to enhance the product and doing so by making it a year-end event and taking advantage of what is normally a lull in live poker action. On Tuesday, Poker Central announced that the next edition of the Super High Roller Bowl will kick off in December. The new event will also change how the High Roller of the Year race plays out.

Super High Roller Bowl V Kicks Off in December

The next edition of the event, Super High Roller Bowl V, will run from December 17-19 at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The event will play out in the PokerGO Studio and if the event lives up to past events, it will feature the top players in the world.

Like previous editions, 25 of the 48 player field will be conducted via a lottery. In order to qualify for the lottery, players must put up a deposit of $30,000 by November 26. Afterward, the lottery draw will be held on PokerGO and that portion of the field set.

Afterward, 18 more players will receive invitations from the ARIA and will be treated as ARIA VIP guests. The final five seats will be awarded to the top five players in the High Roller of the Year Race.

According to Poker Central VP of Content Sam Simmons, “In its first five years of existence, Super High Roller Bowl has grown into one of the most exclusive and highly coveted poker championships in the world as the pinnacle of the High Roller Triple Crown. We’re proud to celebrate that milestone in December, as we implement changes that will continue the success of the event for many years to come.”

As always, the event will feature a $300,000 buy-in and if the prize pool stays the same as this summer, first place will earn $5 million. Justin Bonomo and Daniel Negreanu took the lion’s share of the prize pool this summer with Bonomo taking first and Negreanu earning $3 million for second. Negreanu then dropped close to half of that amount at the 2018 World Series of Poker while Bonomo went on to win the Big One For One Drop and another $10 million.

High Roller of the Year Race to Undergo Changes

Prior to this announcement, the High Roller of the Year was not scheduled to conclude until the summer. With the Super High Roller Bowl now moved to December, organizers have changed how the award will play out. At the end of the year, the player atop the leaderboard will become the High Roller of the Year and then the points race will start over for 2019.

Outside of that change, everything else will remain the same. Players can earn points by cashing in any of the following events:

  • Aria High Roller Series Events
  • U.S. Poker Open
  • Poker Masters
  • Super High Roller Bowl

This change could prove to make this event even more successful as December tends to be a slower period in poker. Most live events have concluded for the year and players are preparing for the holidays. That will potentially allow some players a chance to play that would not otherwise. However, being so close to the holiday season, one has to wonder if that will play a factor in field size.

If the event goes off without any issues and the field is still packed with top-tier talent, then expect this to be a permanent move. However, if event attendance drops or they have to use lesser known players to fill out the field, you can expect a return to a summer date.
