Players to Watch in the Super High Roller Bowl V
The Super High Roller Bowl V kicks off in about a month’s time and many are wondering who will take down the fifth edition of the premier event in High Stakes tournament poker. Soon we will know for certain who will play in the event, but most expect the standard cast of pros will take their shot at an expected $5 million top prize.
Today we take a look at five pros to watch during the Super High Roller Bowl V. Will one of these players take down the prestigious event or will someone else come out of nowhere to take the coveted title?
Justin Bonomo
In 2018, if Justin Bonomo is in a high roller, then his is one of the top players to watch. Bonomo is wrapping up the greatest single year in the history of live poker. He presently has won $25.26 million in live tournaments heading into the Super High Roller Bowl V and is the defending champion of both the 2018 Super High Roller Bowl and 2018 Super High Roller Bowl China.
Bonomo also won the $1 million Big One for One Drop at the 2018 World Series of Poker. That win propelled him into the top spot on the Poker All-Time Money List. He has $43.3 million in live tournament earnings and a win in this event would put him in striking distance of $50 million.
The question now is whether Bonomo has one more big run left in him this year. If you only had money to be on one player in this event, Bonomo would be that player.
David Peters
There isn’t anyone that’s hotter heading into the Super High Roller Bowl than David Peters. Since July, he has four seven-figure scores with two coming in the last month. He won the $100k High Roller of ARIA Fall Madness most recently and just missed out in his second career WSOP bracelet int he €100k Super High Roller Event at the 2018 WSOP.
Peters is enjoying a career year of just over $9 million in earnings. Amazingly, that is only good for fourth on the 2018 Money List. Peters final tabled the Super High Roller Bowl China earlier this year but has not cashed in the Super High Roller Bowl in Las Vegas since the inaugural event in 2015.
Peters has historically been a streaky player in the past and he may have the momentum to take down this event in December.
Nick Petrangelo
Another player in the middle of a career year is Nick Petrangelo. He has won $6.5 million in live events this year and finished sixth in the 2018 Super High Roller Bowl. Petrangelo also won the $100k High Roller at the 2018 WSOP for his first career bracelet.
Petrangelo doesn’t have the massive runs that some players on this list do, but he is remarkably consistent over the years, currently with $16 million in live earnings. When he’s playing his best game, he is one of the best in the business. If he runs deep in this event, he has a great shot to make a run at the title.
Fedor Holz
You can never overlook Fedor Holz in any event he chooses to play. While he only has two cashes in 2018, one of those was a runner-up finish in the Big One for One Drop for $6 million. He has career totals of $32 million.
Like Petrangelo, he is a threat to take the title if he is able to play his best game. Also, since he is not a full-time player, the money will not be as big of a concern, which will give him a bit of an advantage in the later stages of the tournament. He just missed out on winning it all in 2016, falling to good friend Rainer Kempe. This time he could overcome and take his first Super High Roller Bowl title.
Mikita Badziakouski
Outside of Justin Bonomo, no other player has been on a sicker run than Mikita Badziakouski in 2018. He has won $13.86 million this year to bump his career earnings up over $20 million. He has four seven-figure scores and five wins this year. He won the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Jeju Main Event in July for over $5.25 million and put together another $3.3 million in earnings since then.
Badziakouski made three final tables during the 2018 WSOP Europe, including the €100k Super High Roller. If any players are a near-lock to run deep in this event, it’s him. Should Badziakouski enter the final table with a reasonable chip stack, he would be an odds-on favorite to win – provided that Justin Bonomo or David Peters isn’t at the same final table with a healthy stack.
