Dan Cates Wins Final Event of Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Montenegro

The Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Montenegro is in the books, but not before one final event was played out on Sunday. Event #13, the HK$ 300,000 NL Hold’em / Short Deck Deck. This hybrid event drew a small yet elite field of 17 and drew a total of 27 entries to create a prize pool of $1 million USD

In the end, it was Dan Cates that came through with the win. Cates had made two other final tables in this series but this time he came out on top to take down his second Triton Poker title.

Cates Takes Down Second Triton Title in Just Eight Hours

The final event of this series only drew out 17 players and the short field combined with the accelerated schedule led to the event concluding in just a mere eight hours. The event only paid the top three and it was Mike Watson who finished the event as the unfortunate bubble boy. He was all-in with Q-J against 10-9 for Cates but a ten on the flop was enough to end Watson’s day short of any cash.

Rui Cao was the first play in the money and was unable to make it to heads-up play. Cao lost the majority of his stack to Dan Cates when he ran A-K into pocket aces. Shortly thereafter, he was knocked out during Short Deck when he shoved with 8d-2d and ran into Jason Koon’s As-Qh.

This left Jason Koon and Dan Cates heads-up for the title. You’d think that this would lead to an epic showdown between the two players, but the reality was that structure made this a lottery late. Stacks were shallow and blinds were high, so the two players decided to put the chips into the middle on the very first hand of heads-up play.

All we know about the hand is that Jungleman came out on top and won the title. This denied Jason Koon his third Triton Poker title of 2019 but still gave him $301,556 in earnings. For the series, Koon earned over $900k and made two final tables.

For the victory, Jungleman earned $500,682. This was his third final table of the series. He made three final tables this series, finishing sixth, second, and first. For the series, he earned just over $1 million.

After winning his second career Triton Poker title, he told reporters that the win felt, “pretty good.” When asked about his future plans, he told them that he was going to celebrate his win. He said, “There’s a party. I guess I’ll go to that and see what happens next.”

2019 Money List Changes Dramatically After Montenegro

Anyone paying attention to the 2019 Money List noticed a ton of action thanks to events in Montenegro. Four players leapfrogged Ramon Colillas with Bryn Kenney making the biggest gains. During the series, Kenney earned over $4.14 million after winning Event #2 and the Montenegro Main Event. He now has $9.11 million in earnings for 2019.

Paul Phua moved up to second overall after earning over $3.59 million during the series. He didn’t win any events, but he cashed five times and made four final tables, including a runner-up finish in the Short Deck Main Event. Phua has over $6.32 million in earnings this year.

Sam Greenwood earned $1.94 million after making three final tables, including a runner-up finish in Event #5. He’s now third overall with $5.78 million. Jason Koon only managed $941,305 in earnings during the series, but that was enough to move him up to fourth overall with $5.58 million.

Expect the money list to change dramatically over the next two months. In addition to the 2019 World Series of Poker, there will be multiple high roller events at the ARIA this summer. The top five could be very different come the end of July.
