2020 WSOP Online Announced

2020 WSOP Online Bracelet

A few weeks ago, WSOP officials announced that the 2020 World Series of Poker will be delayed until at least the Fall. When they made the announcement, a summer WSOP series was mentioned but nothing finalized, at least until now.

On Monday, WSOP officials announced the World Series of Poker 2020 Online. The series will feature 85 gold bracelet events, entirely online at WSOP.com and GGPoker. This will dramatically increase the number of online bracelets awarded this year, but also it eliminated the opportunity for mixed game players to win a bracelet, at least for now.

WSOP to Host 85 Online Bracelet Events

Following the lead of the Super High Roller Bowl and the World Poker Tour, the World Series of Poker announced that they will be moving WSOP bracelet events online. A press release was issued on Monday at WSOP.com announcing that 85 bracelet events will be run starting on July 1st on WSOP.com and GGPoker.

From July 1st through July 16th, events will be held exclusively at WSOP.com in New Jersey and Nevada. Players physically located in both states will be able to play for WSOP bracelets. Starting on July 17th, events will be held on both WSOP.com and GGPoker.

GGPoker will host bracelet events that will be available for players outside of the United States. US players physically located in the US are prohibited from playing at GGPoker. You can still go outside of the US to play the games.

The last WSOP.com event will run on July 31st while GGPoker will continue running events through September 6th. A complete schedule for WSOP.com events is presently available, but GGPoker will be releasing their schedule on a rolling basis in the near future.

Events Limited to Flop Games

The good news is that there will be bracelet events running this summer. The bad news is that events are limited to flop games. Looking at the available schedule for WSOP.com, events are limited to NL Hold’em, PL Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, and PLO8. Mixed game players are presently out of luck.

The same will likely hold true for GGPoker as they are predominately a Hold’em and Omaha shop. This is similar to what we’ve seen in the past at WSOP.com for standard online bracelet events. Online poker software for the site does not include any tournament formats outside of flop games.

Unfortunately, if the WSOP does eventually cancel the live version of the WSOP, this would shut out non-Hold’em players from competing for bracelets in their favorite games.

Announcement Met With Mixed Reactions

As expected, there are mixed reactions to the announcement. Some think that it is a good thing that the WSOP is moving forward with an online series. Daniel Negreanu took to Twitter to speak about the online series, and is naturally all for it. Granted, he is also the primary ambassador for GGPoker.

Mike Leah also took to Twitter to support the event. Mike missed the WSOP in 2019 due to the birth of his first child and is looking forward to the online series. While he admits that he is an agent for GGPoker, he says that supporting an online tournament series if good for poker.

However, Brandon Shack-Harris was not quite as supportive. He thinks that the series is a money ploy, particularly if the series plans to run later in the year.

An online WSOP series is one of the options we predicted earlier this year when speculating about the future of the 2020 WSOP. While it is not ideal for non-Hold’em players, it is still a better alternative to canceling the series outright.

As the Super High Roller Bowl, Poker Masters Online, and the World Poker Tour have all proven, there is a market for top-tier online poker events. The WSOP is making the logical choice for what’s going on in the world today.
