2020 WSOP Championship Schedule Released

2020 WSOP

World Series of Poker officials continue to reveal details about the 2020 World Series of Poker. On Thursday, organizers released the schedule of 17 championship events for the 2020 WSOP. The list includes the WSOP Main Event, $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship, and the Online Championship.

Also announced was a dedicated leaderboard exclusive to the championship events. The leaderboard will be similar to the WSOP Player of the Year, except that the winner will actually receive a prize.

17 Championship Events to Be Offered

WSOP officials announced on Thursday that they have completed the schedule for the championship events for the 2020 World Series of Poker. The 2020 WSOP will have 17 championship events covering 24 disciplines of poker.

With the exception of the Poker Player’s Championship, all championship events will feature a $10,000 buy-in. One change to this year’s schedule is the WSOP.com ONLINE Championship. This year, it will feature a $10,000 buy-in, making it the largest online tournament in WSOP history.

One other change announced was to the $50,000 Poker Players’ Championship. Starting this year, NL 2-7 Lowball will be added to the rotation. This will make the PPC a nine-game poker tournament variance. The past few years, it has been an 8-Game variant.

Most Events Will Be Freezeout

Something that players like Daniel Negreanu and others will appreciate is that the majority of the Championship events will be freezeouts. The only exceptions are the NL 2-7 Lowball and the Short Deck events. Those events will feature a single re-entry.

According to Jack Effel, WSOP Vice-President, “The Championship Events are always among the most special offered at the WSOP each year. We are proud to be the only tournament series who spreads such an offering and have worked with some of the games most distinguished players this off-season to ensure our schedule and the events themselves align well with where poker is in 2020.”

Championship Leaderboard to Be Utilized

One major change to the WSOP this year will be the institution of a Championship Leaderboard. The leaderboard will work similarly to the WSOP Player of the Year. Players who cash in championship events will earn points towards the leaderboard.

At the end of the summer, the player with the most points will be crowned the champion. According to the announcement, the winner will receive a prize that will be announced in the future. Hopefully, the prize will be something substantial to give players some incentive.

With the Championship Leaderboard now offering a prize to the winner, one has to wonder if the WSOP Player of the Year will award a prize this year. That would seem fitting. Robert Campbell won the 2019 WSOP Player of the year and received nothing other than a banner to hang at the Rio in Las Vegas.
