How to Play Five Card Stud

The rules for 5 Card Stud are pretty simple. Each player receives a total of four cards face up and one card face down. There are several betting rounds followed by a showdown. The player with the best hand wins the pot.

Antes, Deal, and First Betting Round

Five Card Stud uses an antes system that is designed to give the players an incentive to contest each pot. At the beginning of each hand, the players must contribute a small amount of money to the pot. The size of the ante varies but is usually equal to about 10-25% the size of the lower betting limit.

Next, each player is dealt one card face down and one face up. The player with the lowest up-card must pay the bring-in. The bring-in is a mandatory bet equal to half the lower betting limit. That player has the option to leave the bring-in as is, or raise to one full minimum bet. The other players at the table must call the current bet, fold, or raise. The betting action moves clockwise around the table until all players have either matched the current bet or folded.

Second Betting Round

Each player is dealt one card face up. Another betting round begins but this time the betting action begins with the player who has the highest hand showing. Each player has the option to check or bet. If any player bets, the other players must either match that bet, raise or fold.

Third Betting Round

Each player is dealt one card face up. Another betting round begins just like the previous round. From here on out, all bets must be made in increments of the upper betting limit.

Fourth Betting Round and Showdown

Each player is dealt one last card face up. There is one more round of betting. The remaining players now have a showdown and reveal their hidden cards. The player with the best five card poker hand wins the pot.
