It was an interesting theme for this week’s episodes of the hit NBC show Poker After Dark, one of the longest running poker programs in television. Dubbed, Idols Week, PAD pitted 5 young guns in the poker world against the living legend himself, Doyle Brunson, in a $50,000 buy-in, winner-take-all Sit and Go style tournament.
The players who would be testing Doyle were:
Melanie Weisner — A Full Tilt Poker Red Pro who gained her fearsome reputation and honed her poker skills online, playing tournaments under the name Callista.
Eric Baldwin – The 2009 Card Player magazine Player of the Year and current UB Poker Pro, Baldwin has posted back-to-back $1.5 million years on the tournament trail.
Tom Dwan – Better known as ‘durrrr’, Dwan is already a legend and poker idol in his own right despite being in his early 20’s. Having won millions upon millions playing poker, Dwan is a full Team Full Tilt Pro now, and is one of the most feared players in the game.
Andrew Lichtenberger – Another online poker legend, the man known as “luckychewy” has been one of the most profitable online players in the history of the game, and Lichtenberger now his sights set on the live poker scene.
Annette Obrestad – “Annette_15” is probably the most outspoken female player in the history of the game, and after winning the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event at the age of 19 she has been a dominant player on the tournament trail.
Unfortunately for the players in the game –and the viewers at home—Doyle was the first player eliminated when the money went in pre-flop and he flopped top two pair against Eric Baldwin’s bottom set, when the turn and river bricked Brunson was sent packing in 6th place.
Next out the door was Obrestad who was eliminated by Weisner, followed by Lichtenberger who lost a ton of chips to Tom Dwan, and was finished off on the next hand by Dwan.
With three players left, Melanie Weisner found herself on the short-stack and even though she got her money in good with AJ vs. durrrr’s KT she was eliminated in 3rd place when Dwan paired his King on the flop.
Dwan and Baldwin entered heads-up play fairly even in chips, but all that would change when Dwan flopped top and bottom pair and Baldwin got overly-aggressive with just middle pair. Now nursing a short-stack Baldwin was one card away from doubling through Dwan and getting back in the match when durrrr once again hit a King to take the lead; this time on the river.
Dwan, who has been getting hammered at the online poker tables this year walked away with the $300 in total prize-money, giving him a nice profit of $250,000 for the week.
