In this three-part series I will take a look at three up and coming poker players you should keep your eye on in 2011. If you haven’t heard of these three players, trust me, by the end of 2011 you most certainly will! These players are the next group of young talent like 2010’s Tome Marchese, Faraz Jaka, and Vanessa Selbst.
Next up on the docket, is the toe-headed cash-game specialist William Reynolds:
William Reynolds
Reynolds is still an unknown commodity in the poker world despite his outstanding success, but all that is likely to change in 2011 thanks to his scene-stealing appearance on PokerStars.net’s The Big Game, where his skills, likeable personality, and quirky behavior made the young Reynolds an instant star of televised poker.
Reynolds is mainly a cash game player, which would explain his relative anonymity up to this point, but the young pro did put himself on the poker map by winning the 2010 PCA High-Roller event where he pocketed $576,240. The win was Reynolds second substantial cash on the live tournament trail; his first coming in 2009 when he finished 4th in the EPT San Remo Main Event adding $493,733 to his ever-swelling bankroll.
Since the PCA, Reynolds has found his way to another major tournament’s final table, this time finishing 3rd in the WSOP Circuit Main Event in Hammond, Indiana where he won $110,567 in prize-money.
But Reynolds biggest coup came during his week-long appearance on The PokerStars.net Big Game where along with Tony G and Daniel Negreanu the youngster’s personality was able to shine.
Reynolds was also involving in a Bizzaro World story when along with Kevin Stani, Kayvan Payman, and Carter Phillips, the group got a little tipsy in Barcelona at which point Payman got ahead of the rest of the group and was robbed of some €4,000 by local thieves.
After soliciting help from a closed restaurant Reynolds explains the rest of his story thusly:
“(One) is holding a frying pan and the other is holding an 18in machete. I’m like wow these guys really want to help us. I approach the man with the machete attempting to talk a mix of simple english and spanish when all of a sudden he comes at me with a Steven Segal kick straight to my chest that connects. He than begins to assume the role of Zorro and starts thrusting the blade directly at my heart with his first attempt making the smallest of contact. While he is doing this I am not trying to fight back and just continue to move back with my hands up in the air reaching for the sky in this little enclosed spot. At the same time the man with the frying pan is trying to crack Payman’s skull. The two guys we were trying to get help from end up causing more harm than the robbers. This entire time my eyes are fixated on this crazy spaniard and his machete. Eventually the 2 realize we are not trying to fight back and go back inside their locked store.”
So, it would appear that William Reynolds is not only exciting to watch at the tables, but away from them as well!
The next player I will profile will be live tournament phenom Mohshin Charania.
