A while back I did a post about the top five resources for sit and go players, and this article is in the same vein except that it focuses on multi table tournaments. Multi table tournaments (MTTs, for short) are one of the most popular poker game-types because they limit your potential losses to the tournament’s buy-in, while at the same time providing players with a chance at a huge payday. To complement the launch of our new MTT strategy section, I am going to list five of my other favorite resources out there for learning how to beat multi table poker tournaments. Let’s get into it…
#1 – The TwoPlusTwo.com MTT Forums
TwoPlusTwo is the largest and most advanced poker forum on the planet, so it is only fitting that their mammoth MTT section topped this list (their SNG section also made it onto our list of the top five SNG resources). Between the small stakes, mid stakes, and high stakes MTT forums, there are 100,000+ different topics with over 1 million total posts. Everyday there are dozens of new topics and hundreds of new posts, and the unique part about TwoPlusTwo’s forum is that the discussion is extremely focused on strategy – there are no “LOLCats” or other BS topics to waste players’ time.
It’s free to join TwoPlusTwo, all you need to do is sign up with an email/password and you are good to go. I highly recommend the TwoPlusTwo MTT forums for aspiring MTT players, as I personally know several successful MTT players who learned most if not all that they know by reading and contributing to the TwoPlusTwo MTT section everyday.
#2 – The PlayWinningPoker.com MTT Section
Steve Badger’s PlayWinningPoker.com is one of the oldest and most-trusted poker strategy resources online. Although the MTT section of Steve’s site only contains about two dozen strategy articles, each article is extremely in-depth, and even the most seasoned MTT players will get at least a few new ideas from the write-ups.
I especially like Steve’s article about risking a loss in order to win – no one has ever won a big poker tournament without getting lucky, and this article explains exactly when you should risk a loss in order to build your stack.
#3 – PokerXFactor.com
PokerXFactor.com is a paid online poker training site, but the content and strategy here is well worth the price ($24.95/month with a $119.25 sign-up fee). Although there are dozens of training sites out there, PokerXFactor definitely reigns supreme when it comes to multi-table tournament strategy.
The site offers over 600 poker tournament training videos, all produced by some of the biggest names in poker including Sheets and JohnnyBax. Mid- and high-stakes tournament players receive incredible value here, because the strategy presented in the videos specifically pertains to big buy-in tournaments, where a single pay bump could earn back the membership price many times over. #4 – PhantomShark’s MTT Strategy Thread at ThePokerForum.com
PhantomShark wrote a ridiculously insightful post at ThePokerForum.com which is an enormous list of hand histories from a poker tournament that he won. After posting each hand history PhantomShark details why he made the plays he did, based on the stage of the tournament, his chip stack, his opponent, and more.
If you want to get inside the head of a winning player and see exactly how he makes decisions throughout a MTT, check this thread out. Warning – the thread is long and will take a while to read, but it is a very valuable MTT resource.
#5 – 180-Man Sit and Gos at PokerStars
This isn’t a resource that you can go browse and come out a better player, but when it comes to winning poker tournaments, experience really is king. The best way to get experience fast is to play the 180-man tournaments at PokerStars.com.
These tournaments only take a few hours, but they teach you how to succeed during the early stages, middle stages, bubble, late stages, and final table of a poker tournament. Plus, since the 180-man SNGs fill up pretty often, you can multi-table these to increase your learning rate significantly. If you decide to try them out, make sure to use our 180-man SNG strategy guide.
