Last weekend Full Tilt Poker held their first online qualifier for their newly formed Onyx Cup Series –a live tournament series featuring buy-ins from $100,000 to $300,000. While these stakes are well beyond the pay grade of most poker players, the $600+$40 online qualifier hosted by Full Tilt Poker was a little more reasonable, and drew a decent number of entrants, 124 in total.
The tournament was guaranteeing a top prize of a $105,000 Onyx Cup package, and was won by poker Sorel Mizzi. With only $74,400 in entry-fees Mizzi –who plays under the screen-name “Imper1um” at Full Tilt Poker—not only had a chance to win a $100k buy-in but was also getting a pretty substantial overlay to boot!
Mizzi was recently allowed back on Full Tilt Poker just a few months ago, and in that time has fared very well — he had banned from Full Tilt Poker for almost three years after a variety of offenses including multi-accounting and purchasing accounts deep in tournaments. For $600 Mizzi now finds himself in the enviable position of participating in a small multi-table tournament –likely to have between 30 and 50 entrants—with $3-$5 million up for grabs.
Full Tilt Poker will be awarding five entries via online satellites to the first Onyx Cup tournament:
- March 27th at 18:30 ET. Buy in for $600 + $40, awards one Onyx Cup Series Event 1 prize package. (Won by Sorel Mizzi)
- April 10th at 18:30 ET. Buy in for $1,000 + $60, awards one Onyx Cup Series Event 1 prize package.
- May 1st at 18:30 ET. Buy in for $2000 + $100, awards two Onyx Cup Series Event 1 prize packages.
In addition to the four packages above, Full Tilt will award an Onyx Cup prize package to the player who finishes in the Top 4 of a Round 1 freeroll tournament, then goes on to finish in the Top 100 of a Round 2 freeroll, Round 2 winners will then take part in a freeroll tournament on May 01 2011, where the winner will be awarded the $105,000 prize package.
The Onyx Cup Series is scheduled as a five stop tour, featuring high-stakes tournaments with buy-ins between $100k and $300k, followed by a sixth, $250k buy-in, Grand Finale tournament. In addition to the prize-money awarded players will also be competing for the Onyx Cup which will be awarded to the top player over the course of the six tournaments.
